Podcast industry experts gathering at the Dubai PodFest 2023 last month said that podcasting is experiencing an unprecedented surge in popularity worldwide and audience numbers are expected to rise into the future.
“The first thing that we should address whenever we talk about podcasting is growth,” said keynote speaker, Michelle Cobb, executive director of The Podcast Academy. “We've seen remarkable growth in the number of podcasts being produced, the revenue from podcasting and the number of people who are involved in the podcasting industry.”
Cobb informed the PodFest that over five million podcasts with over 70 million episodes and an estimated 465 million podcast listeners were active worldwide, figures taken from a report by Demand Sage.
"Tremendous Growth"
Cobb highlighted tremendous growth in the podcast industry since its inception in 2000. She noted that the morning is the most popular time for podcast listening, and smartphones are the most commonly used device to listen to podcasts.
Scandinavian countries have a high rate of podcast listening due to their love of the spoken word and high English language proficiency. Countries like Chile, Argentina, Peru and Mexico are among the fastest growing podcast markets.
Increase in Podcast Listenership
Citing another report from 2021, Cobb said that the UK, Canada, Australia, India and Brazil have seen an increase in listenership, while Japan continues to experience growth.
Cobb further noted that younger people tend to be the main listeners of podcasts globally. Apple, YouTube, and Spotify are the most popular platforms for podcast listeners worldwide. People's listening habits have returned to pre-pandemic levels and match global trends in 2019.
In a more recent report by Edison, 64 percent of the US population aged 12 and above have listened to a podcast, making it currently the biggest market segment. Since 2015, the average time spent on podcast listening has doubled in the US, from four and a half hours to over nine hours per week in 2023. The most popular genres of podcasting in the US include comedy, society and culture, news and true crime, with the latter being a key driver of increased listenership.
The Dubai PodFest 2023 also featured a session that brought together prominent podcasters from around the world to share their inspirational stories. Participants talked about their experiences and the challenges they faced in creating podcasts.
